Verso l'alto

Verso l'alto/To the Heights

Blessed Pier Gorgio Frassati

Born in 1901 in Turin, Italy, Pier Giorgio lived with a deep love for the Eucharist and a passion for helping the poor. A true adventurer, he found God in nature, often hiking and mountaineering, and his zest for life was matched only by his commitment to social justice and his care for the marginalized.

Though he died at just 24 from polio, likely contracted while helping those in need, Pier Giorgio’s legacy continues to inspire. His funeral was attended by thousands, a testament to the profound impact he had on his community. Beatified in 1981 by Pope John Paul II, he remains a shining example of how to live a life fully committed to Christ, especially through love, joy, and action. One of his favorite mottos, "Verso l’alto" ("To the Heights"), was a constant reminder to strive for the highest ideals and to seek the greatness of God in all things.

Today, Blessed Pier Giorgio is a patron for young people, a model of holiness who shows us how to balance adventure, social responsibility, and deep faith. His life reminds us that we are all called to love radically, live joyfully, and seek God in every corner of life.

Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati,
pray for us!
