“The Lucky One” - St. Josephine Bakhita

Verso l’ alto Designs pours love and prayer into each rosary we craft here in La Sleva, CA.

St. Josephine Bakhita (c. 1869–1947) was born in present-day Sudan. At the age of 7 she was kidnapped and endured brutal treatment over many years. She was given the name Bakhita, which means "lucky" or "fortunate" in Arabic—a bitter irony given her suffering. Eventually sold to an Italian family and brought to Italy, she encountered Christianity for the first time. She found hope and healing in the Catholic faith, was baptized “Josephine” in 1890, and later became a Canossian Sister, dedicating her life to service. She was also given the name “African Flower.” The phrase "African flower" is used to describe her beauty and the way she bloomed, even in the face of suffering.

She was canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II and is today celebrated as a symbol of hope and forgiveness. She is the first black female saint and the patron saint of slavery, victims of human trafficking, and of Sudan.
